GRID-TIED SOLAR SYSTEMS

What is a Grid-Tied Solar Panel System?

Grid-tied means that your solar array is connected to the public grid supply. It’s set up so that the power produced from your panels is used first, then if you need more—like at night—it comes from the grid supply. When your panels produce more than you’re consuming, the excess is exported to the grid.

The goal is to install the right size system and align your load as much as possible to the solar output so that you minimise your imported power and maximise consumption of your solar generated power.

Grid-tied solar power is the most common, simplest system and is the cheapest to set up, meaning you can see the fastest return on your investment through savings on power bills. You may even get credit from your energy supplier for electricity from your panels that you didn’t use.

How it works

A solar array is mounted, usually on the roof to capture sunlight through the day time, which the solar panels turn into electrical energy.

The energy goes to an inverter which converts the power to 230V AC electricity (that’s the kind you usually use in the house) and sends it to your switchboard where you use it for all your household electrical load, just as you do normally with grid power.

When the panels are generating more than is being used, the excess electricity is sent into the grid.

During high load demand and at night when the panels are not generating, electricity from the grid is used.

The inverter controls the flow of electricity so that the power from the solar panels is always used in priority over the grid.

A Great return on investment

As well as generating energy, grid-tied solar power generates a return on your investment through savings on your power bills.

Find out what you could be saving!

As well as generating energy, solar power can effectively generate income—as a return on your investment through savings on power bills. These savings effectively pay for the system within a relatively short time.  After that—FREE power!—effectively a good return of profit through the ongoing savings.

We give you an expected ROI by analysing your site, using NIWA’s historical sunshine data, and current energy prices.

These graphs show an expected return and payback projection based on a 4.16kW system, saving $0.30c per kWh of grid supply.

The sooner you go solar, the greater the return ~ so why hold off on a good investment?

With the solar technology available today, it has become economically viable—and even profitable—to install grid-tied solar power for many homes.

Solar Photo Voltaic (PV) systems are cost effective, easy to install and do not require resource or building consent, making them the clear contender for domestic and commercial auxiliary energy production both now and in the future.
